FINE ARTS

The Monroe City School Board recognizes that arts education, including dance, theatre, music (choral, band and orchestra), and visual arts, is an integral part of the core curriculum for all Kindergarten through grade twelve (K-12) students.

The School Board encourages development, implementation, and evaluation of quality, standards-based sequential and comprehensive K-12 arts education, with equity and access for all.

The School Board supports the following elements, among others, in developing and implementing the School District's arts education in district schools:

  1. Standards-based arts curriculum, scheduling and assessment based on the National Standards

  2. Qualified teachers in the arts

  3. Professional development for classroom and arts teachers consistent with Louisiana's Visual and Performing Arts content standards

  4. Standards-based instructional materials and equipment

  5. Opportunities to showcase student learning and student work

  6. Integration of and access to professional artists, cultural organizations and other community arts resources.

  7. Facilities appropriate to achieve educational/instructional standards

  8. Provision for ongoing review, program evaluation, and development of the District's arts education program through the partnership with the University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM) School of Visual and Performing Arts

  9. A Fine Arts Advisory Committee shall be appointed by the School Board to include but not be limited to representation from:  ULM School of Visual and Performing Arts, representatives from each area of content within the existing arts program in Monroe City Schools, representatives from the business and cultural community, and parents.

The School Board also supports the need to provide funding for high quality, standards-based K-12 arts education in an equitable manner, consistent with the principle that arts education is an integral part of the core curriculum.
