SPECIAL USE OF SCHOOL BUSES
It shall be the policy of the Monroe City School Board to permit the use of school buses for student trips or excursions to enhance instructional activities. The use of buses for such trips shall be strictly governed by regulations adopted by the School Board and/or established by the Superintendent or administrative staff. All arrangements for any trip or excursion shall be made by either the Transportation Supervisor or the Superintendent.
Any school or organization may use buses for athletic or activity trips. The Board shall be reimbursed by the school or organization the expense equal to the cost of operation of the buses for the particular event. The bus operator shall provide proof of appropriate insurance coverage prior to any trip being taken. In addition, the following guidelines shall also apply to the special use of any school bus:
For activities of an educational nature within the district, the use of the buses shall be requested by the principal of the school involved and it shall be limited in time so as not to interfere with the regular route to which that bus is assigned.
For educational activities outside the district, the use of the buses shall be limited to transporting those students who are engaged in representing their school in the principal activity for which the trip is required. The request shall also come from the principal involved.
Approval for the use of the buses shall be requested at a time prior to the trip sufficient for the office staff to evaluate the request and to make the arrangements necessary. All buses on all occasions shall be driven by a person with a commercial driver's license. The principal of the school involved shall be held responsible for seeing that the above condition is met.
SELECTION OF BUS OPERATORS FOR FIELD TRIPS AND OTHER EXTRA DUTY
Each bus operator interested in extra duty assignments, such as field trips, summer tutorial, enrichment programs, or other parish-sponsored events for the school year shall submit his/her name to the Supervisor of Transportation by August 1st. A master list of bus operators shall be prepared to select operators for extra duty. The list shall be generated by a random selection of those bus operators who have submitted their names.
As trips are scheduled, the bus operator at the top of the list shall be offered the trip. The operator may choose to accept the extra duty, or decline. Once an operator has accepted or declined extra duty, the operator’s name shall drop to the end of the list. Rotation shall continue in similar fashion until all interested operators have had the opportunity to accept or decline extra duty.
Bus operators may request to be removed from the rotation list at any time.
No bus operator will be added to the rotation list after August 1st. The rotation list shall be revised annually in August.
